Return to nature
Films, nature and technology will come together with the return of All Living Things Environmental Film Festival (ALT EFF) in a hybrid format in November this year. Having spent the last two years in the virtual domain, founder Kunal Khanna is hoping for big things this year. “This is a big year for ALT EFF as we finally bring the films through in-person screenings and simultaneously offer the virtual programme completely free for audiences across the country,” Khanna shared. The festival will host 55 films and 33 India-exclusive premieres. To boot, the jury line-up includes Amit Masurkar and Kiran Rao. Masurkar described climate change as a real threat facing the world today. “The film festival is helping create awareness and steer public opinion in favour of conservation and animal rights. I look forward to watching incredible films from all over the world that have been curated to create a positive change in our thinking and behaviour,”
he told this diarist.
Monthly dose of culture
The last two editions of Girgaum’s micro cultural festival Khotachiwadi Alive have inspired the heritage precinct’s resident fashion designer James Ferreira to announce what he promises will be a monthly pop-up at his home that celebrates the best of home-grown fashion, art, culture and food, starting October 14. And he is calling it 47G. “As it’s [first floor of his cottage] a large space, I thought it would be interesting to showcase enterprising designers I believe in,” he told mid-day. Ferreira’s eclectic collection of artefacts will be on sale, too. “I hope that 47G grows organically, so that other interesting initiatives can also take off in Khotachiwadi,” he added.
Reel life of a master
This diarist was thrilled to learn that director-screenwriter Khalid Mohamed’s documentary — The Master — on Shyam Benegal’s life and work will be screened at Godrej Dance Theatre, NCPA, on Thursday. “A few weeks ago, I posted about how nobody has shown interest in buying my documentary yet. It caught the attention of netizens. As we prepare to screen it, I remember the longest hug of my lifetime — when the film was screened for the first time; Benegal turned towards me and held me in a tight hug. It wasn’t followed by words,” Mohamed recalled.
A new chapter unfolds in Vikhroli
Bookworms in the eastern suburbs looking to surround themselves with books, or find a quiet spot to read won’t have to travel too far now. Bandra’s popular bookstore Title Waves is setting up an outlet — their first since opening in 2011 — inside the premises of The Trees in Vikhroli East, off the Eastern Express Highway. The bookstore, spread across approximately 1,500 sq ft, will open its doors on October 14. Executive director Trushant Tamgaonkar shared that it will bear the familiar look-and-feel of the Bandra outlet. “We will try to experiment with the book curation based on the needs and interests of the customers. We also plan to collaborate and use their amphitheatre for cultural events,” he said, adding, “The surroundings are peaceful — like a small town within a city. That’s the best part.”
From Marol comes a Mayor

It is always a moment to celebrate when one of our city’s own reaches new heights and milestones. Take for instance when Marol’s Mary R Antony was appointed the Mayor of Royston, a town in the UK, a few months ago. Mayor Antony is now back in the city for a brief visit, halting at the places that furthered her career with crucial milestones. One of the stops included a ceremony to celebrate her appointment, held yesterday at the school where she studied and taught — St John the Evangelist High School. Born in Marol and having shifted to the UK only 12 years ago, Mayor Antony recalls always having her mind and heart set on service, whether it was through teaching or community work. As an active community member, she was asked to join a local party in the town called Royston Town Party. This year, having won a majority of seats for her ward’s town council, she was appointed mayor with unanimous votes from the council members and other parties. “The focus of my work highlights support towards local businesses and our town market, to prevent them from losing business as more online stores crop up,” she shared.
