The Sanctuary Wildlife Awards honour India’s heroes who dedicate their lives to the protection of the biosphere. This year, among the winners are Dr Ravikant Khobragade and Prajakta Hushangabadkar from Maharashtra. The veterinary officer and wildlife biologist, respectively, work at Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. “From bringing rescues home in his childhood, to risking his life to protect the lives of both wild animals and people, he is imb-ued with a deep desire to prevent traumatic human-animal interact-ions,” the foundation noted about Khobragade, adding that Hushanga-badkar’s “knowledge of hardcore conservation issues, a result of years of study and close observation of animals in the wild, have enabled her to bring rational science and social realities to the notice of policy makers.” We wish them the best.

An app-t idea

If you’re the kind of nature-lover who likes to identify flora and fauna while on a trail, here’s an app that will guide you while visiting Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Developed by the Kharghar-based INaturewatch Foundation, eForestrails-Karnala will soon be available for download on Android and iOS, and work offline as well. Founder Dr V Shubhalaxmi Reddy shared that the app is based on the idea of cellphone nature tours. “The app will provide visitors with a self-guided nature trail. We’ve identified one-km stretches on three trails in the sanctuary where we’ve mapped points of interest, including trees and birding areas. The routes have been GPS-mapped, and each point is supported by information about the species, along with pictures and calls. People can also opt for the virtual assistant, Jungle Guru’s commentary. However, we don’t want to do away with nature guides altogether; the app is like a teaser for interested people to help them explore more,” she added.

Weekend vibes are back

A part of getting back into the groove involves checking for physical weekend events, like we used to earlier, and here’s some news to bring back those familiar vibes. The much-loved music festival BACARDÍ NH7 Weekender is returning with live editions in February 2022. These editions have been planned for Pune, Kolkata and Delhi NCR. They will also host city takeovers in eight cities including Mumbai. The festival is being organised by NODWIN Gaming this time. Akshat Rathee, its co-founder and MD, told us, “We believe it will spread the right dose of happiness.” And they have cool plans to augment the fun — “We will take over multiple clubs over a weekend and introduce the on-ground festival vibe. You can ride on a Ferris Wheel, sip on curated cocktails, browse art exhibits, and do a lot more along with listening to diverse indie music programming across different genres.”

Cycling across 1,400 km for women’s well-being

Cycling across 1,400 km for women’s well-being

Social sector professional Disha Shrivastava and Dr Nandita Paranjpe Joshi are two Mumbai-based mothers who are setting off on a cycling tour across four states to drive a conversation about women’s well-being, the guilt they often face due to societal expectations, and self-love. Both the women are triathletes who are interested in swimming, running and cycling. Their 1,400-km cycling trail, titled Chakr-Circle of Life, will kick off from Gateway Of India on December 18; they aim to cross Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat in nine days. “We often get a lot of queries about juggling our triathlon training with work, family, children and homely duties. There are questions like if you’re away from home for a few days for training, who takes care of the place, or who makes food? We felt that we should talk about these issues and reach out to women about it,” Shrivastava (in pic) said.
