As the fresh lockdown began to take effect, the number of users of local trains in the city dropped from 40 lakh a day to nearly 30 lakh on Thursday and remained more or less the same on Friday.

Railway officials said they have been monitoring the situation closely and as of now there are no strict restrictions, but efforts are on to ensure that only genuine travellers board the locals.

Officials said 11,86,227 people travelled on local trains on the Western Railway on April 15, while the count for the Central Railway was 17,72,174.

On Day 1 of the lockdown, BEST ferried 14.12 lakh passengers against its daily footfall of about 25 lakh in March. The undertaking has allowed only seating passengers on its buses.

Rides on autos and taxis are also on the slide as many vehicles are not plying due to curbs, summer vacation and losses.
