Mumbai: Daily Covid-19 cases rise to 16,420, TPR jumps to 24.38 per cent

After witnessing a downward trend in daily cases and test positivity rate, Mumbai saw a sharp rise in both along with COVID fatalities on Wednesday. According to the BMC, 16,420 people tested positive during the day with a TPR of 24.38 per cent. The virus claimed seven lives in the city. Across the state, 46,723 new cases and 32 deaths were reported.  


“Due to the recent change in the National COVID testing guidelines 2 days ago, where it has been directed that only symptomatic cases will be tested, it is likely to create a spike in positivity as most of the symptomatic cases would be almost confirmed positive cases,” said IS Chahal, BMC commissioner.


All the seven people who died of COVID were comorbid and above 60.


There was a marginal rise in patients hospitalised on Wednesday at 916. The recovery rate remained at 87 per cent as 14,649 people were discharged. The doubling rate in the city is 36 days.
The state saw a significant rise in the number of cases and deaths at 46,723 and 32 respectively.

The state’s case-fatality rate dipped to 2.01 per cent. While 28,041 people were discharged, active cases stood at 2,40,122 on Wednesday.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region registered 30,107 infections. The Thane Municipal Corporation and Navi Mumbai reported 2,601 and 2,314 cases respectively. While Panvel saw 1,785 cases, Vasai-Virar had 1,101 cases and Thane city had 1,090 cases. Other than Mumbai, the MMR saw 15 deaths. Six deaths were reported in Vasai-Virar and two in Panvel.

On Wednesday, 86 new Omicron cases were reported in the state of which 27 are from city. So far, 1,367 Omicron cases have been registered of which 734 have been discharged.
