The 26-year-old woman, who is also alleging torture for dowry, is currently staying at her relative’s place and running from pillar to post for justice. She hails from Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh. She said, “Our marriage took place on July 13, 2013, it was an arranged marriage.
My husband (30) is a hardware engineer and based in the US for the past several years. As dowry we had given him valuables worth more than Rs 30 lakh. After marriage I came to my husband’s place at Kherwadi, Bandra. He went to the US but my in laws did not allow me to go with him. In November 2013, after I repeatedly pressurized them I was allowed to go to the US.”
She alleged that in the US her husband forced her to have unnatural sex. She came back to India after few months. Her in laws then began to torture her for more dowry. She says they would throw her out of the house and let her in only after she had gone home and brought money. They would verbally abuse her and push her. She also alleges that her father-in-law began to touch her inappropriately when her mother-in-law was out.
The woman then came to know that a spiritual guru advised her husband’s family. She said he brainwashed them and convinced them she is not good for their family. She said, “The baba told them that they should distance me and throw me out of the house. They should get my husband married to another woman, after which money will come to them.”
The woman is at her relative’s place since August. On November 23 she and her family approached Kherwadi police station, but the police allegedly refused to take action. She said, “In front of the police my in laws offered me Rs 10,000 and asked me to go back. Only my statement was taken and a non cognizable offence registered. Nothing else.”
Senior police inspector Rekha Bhavre of Kherwadi police station said, “I am aware of the matter, but the concerned investigating officer is different.” When asked about the money offered to the woman in front of the police she said, “I have no knowledge about that.” She did not take more calls.
The woman and her family will approach the Maharashtra State Commission for Women.
