Mumbai: COVID-19 cases steady, deaths on decline

As city recorded 414 cases on Saturday and four deaths, rest of MMR registered zero deaths; 3,390 frontline workers vaccinated

Although there hasn’t been much difference in daily cases in the city and the state for over a month, COVID-19 related deaths are on a decline. The city recorded four deaths on Saturday, whereas MMR excluding the city recorded no deaths. There were 25 deaths registered across the state on the same day. Though there are fewer active patients in Pune, it recorded nine deaths.

The daily cases of COVID-19 have been fluctuating from 400 to 500 over the last two weeks in the city. On Saturday, the city recorded 414 new cases. The number of deaths has been reducing and the four patients who died had co-morbidities. On December 30, there were 13 deaths reported and since then, the daily toll has been limited to single-digit figured only. Now, it seems to have declined to below five. Meanwhile, 299 patients recovered in the city. The recovery rate has stabilised at 94 per cent. There are still 5,708 active cases in the city.

The state recorded 2,768 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, out of which 797 were reported in the MMR including Mumbai. All the other cities in MMR reported less than 100 patients each. Pune circle registered 533 and Nagpur registered 445 cases. Out of 25 deaths, 10 deaths were reported in Pune circle and four in Nashik.

The cumulative number of cases in the state is 20.41 lakh and the recovery rate of the state is at 95.7 per cent.

6,914 received the vaccine on Saturday
The BMC contacted 5,185 health workers and 3,390 frontline workers for the vaccination drive on Saturday, of which 4,407 health workers and 2,507 frontline workers got the vaccine. The BMC completed 81 per cent of its target. There will be no vaccination on Sunday.
 
The city started vaccinating frontline workers along with health workers last Thursday. Though only 58 frontline workers turned up for the vaccination on the first day, now the numbers have started increasing. The corporation also added one more centre to the vaccination booth, i.e. VD Savarkar Hospital in Malad.
