Going ahead with its plan to keep a check on violations of quarantine rules, the BMC has declared all the sealed buildings in the city as micro containment zones (MCZ) and police personnel have started guarding most of these societies, starting Thursday.

The civic body has been sealing societies and buildings with five or more COVID-19 cases since the outbreak of the second wave of Coronavirus spread. Entry of visitors is barred and residents, too, are not allowed to leave the premises. And to ensure there is no violation, which is likely to cause further spread of the virus, police are keeping guard at these societies.

Police sources told mid-day that the city as of Friday has 750 MCZs and 775 police personnel have been deployed across these zones. And 102 of these MCZs (Zone XI-50 and Zone XII-52) are in north Mumbai alone.

An officer from north Mumbai police told mid-day that they received the order for force deployment on Thursday. Additional personnel are being sent from the Load and Arms (LA) and other departments of the Mumbai police, the officer said. These officers are supposed to monitor the movement inside the MCZs and prevent visitors from entering the premises.

“It is true that people will face difficulty, but this is how we can stop the spread of Coronavirus. People are requested to cooperate with us in this effort,” the officer added.

Deployment of police personnel has started across all the 16 police station jurisdictions in north Mumbai. There are some areas where force has not been sent yet due to lack of personnel, but it’ll happen soon, the officer said.

Mumbai police’s PRO Chaitanya S told mid-day, “Till now, 750 buildings in the city have been declared micro containment zones. Till now, 775 police personnel from LA and five companies of the State Reserve Police Force have been deployed in these MCZs. We have asked for 1,000 home guards.”
