A thief, who had fled from police custody a couple of days after being detained in August, confessed in court that a constable helped him to escape in return for Rs 4.7 lakh. Ejaz Chaudhary (26), who was earlier detained in a house break-in case, was tracked down and arrested last month.

Two cases solved
The police said Chaudhary was arrested from Delhi by Nalasopara crime branch officers. Till now, two house break-in cases involving him have been solved and 400 g of gold has been recovered. The police said he was involved in several such incidents in Nalasopara, Vasai and Malabar Hill areas.

When he appeared before the Vasai court on November 25, he said constable Shivnandan Sutnase, who arrested him last month, had taken Rs 4 lakh from him and Rs 70,000 from his wife to help him escape from jail. Sources said Chaudhary and Sutnase knew each other.

It’s baseless
After hearing the accused’s statement, the court ordered superintendent of police (SP) Sharda Raut to conduct an inquiry into it. Speaking to mid-day, Sutnase said, “People who are arrested often make up such stories to prove that they are innocent. These allegations are baseless; if I am called for an inquiry, I’ll definitely be present.”

“I have asked the additional SP to investigate the matter. He will submit a report soon,” said Raut.
