G South ward is the first administrative division in Mumbai to undertake 3D mapping of about 10 sq. km of the place

Given the growing population and expanding needs of Mumbai, providing basic civic amenities, building infrastructure and implementing large projects is a major challenge faced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on a daily basis. Recognizing this, the state's Mumbai Suburban District Guardian Minister, Aaditya Thackeray, had suggested a three-dimensional map of the city in digital format.

Following this, the BMC administration recently adopted the latest technology such as GIS, SAP, robots, drones and undertook 3D mapping of Worli – Thackeray's constituency. The G South ward is now the first administrative division in Mumbai to undertake 3D mapping of about 10 sq. km of Worli, and has also prepared its digital twin. With this, Mumbai has entered the list of international cities with 3D mapping.
The map created using digital technology is expected to change the way the ward operates. By observing through 360 degrees, the area can be seen from all aspects like height-width, depth, etc. Any change in it can be immediately verified and used as evidence.
'Important for civic governance'
“Geospatial models are important for civic governance. This three-dimensional map technology is invaluable not only in the implementation of projects but also in the quality of infrastructure services, proper planning, evaluation of civic services, effective disaster management, climate change impact analysis, and public safety,” said G south ward officer, Sharad Ugade.
“The maps are prepared with the help of Light Detection and Ranging Survey (Lidar technology). This includes aerial photography with the help of small and light aircraft, measurement and shooting with the help of flying instruments like drones (high resolution payload), measurement and imaging with the help of modern instruments on mobile vehicles (mobile street imagery). It also includes sensors. Therefore, the actual terrain, every centimetre of the area is calculated very accurately. All these functions are combined to give a final digital shape,” he further explained.
The 3D mapping will be on the municipal cloud. The project will be of great help to various departments of the corporation, various state and central government offices.
