Mumbai: Bag full of mobile phones stolen from Borivali mall, one held

A bag full of mobile phones of different brands worth over Rs 2.33 lakh was allegedly stolen from a shop in Borivali mall in Mumbai. The Borivali Police managed to nab the suspect just hours after the crime, the police said.


According to the police, the incident took place on Monday morning between 10:30 am and 11 am when an employee of a shop, that deals in selling mobile phones, was cleaning the outlet.



"While the employee was cleaning the shop and the counter, he had kept the mobile phones in a bag. Meanwhile, a man came to the spot and fled away with the bag," an official said.


The entire incident was captured in CCTV footage. Following the incident, the police were informed about the matter. Multiple teams from the Borivali police launched search operations to locate and nab the suspect, the police said.

Under the guidance of Ajay Kumar Bansal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 11 and Borivali Senior Police Inspector Ninad Sawant, on the basis of clues from sources and CCTV footage, the information about a suspect was received and it was learned that the accused was coming to sell some of the mobile phones in the Borivali area on Tuesday, the police said.

"He was taken into custody and his involvement in the crime was revealed. After detailed interrogations, the suspect was placed under arrest," the official added.

The suspect was identified as John Fernandes alias Kiran Bagde, 41. He is a resident of the Palghar area in Maharashtra, the police said.

Investigations have also revealed that the suspect had also been allegedly involved in crimes previously and cases in police stations including Nirmal Nagar, Dahisar, Kurar and Nalasopara were registered against him, the police said.

Following his arrest, the police have recovered over 50 per cent of the stolen property, efforts are further being made to recover the rest of the property, the official added.
