Mumbai Air Customs have arrested one Indian national travelling to Dubai and seized 1559.6 carat natural and lab-grown diamonds worth Rs 1.49 crore, officials told news agency ANI.


According to the officials, the accused was arrested on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody.


"The seized diamonds were ingeniously concealed inside a tea packet," officials told news agency ANI.


Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Earlier, Cochin Customs officers on Friday recovered gold, worth around Rs 85 lakh, from the rear toilet of an Indigo Airlines plane.

The gold was in paste form found in two unclaimed bags, said officials.

The officials said the gold weighed around 1,709 grams.

"On the basis of information received from Indigo Airlines staff, two unclaimed packets containing gold in paste form were recovered from the rear toilet of flight 6E 1404 from AUH," said Cochin Customs. Further investigation is on in the pursuant of the recovery, the officials added.

Meanwhile, the Air Customs unit at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi arrested a passenger returning from Dubai after 2.3 kilograms of gold paste was recovered from his lugguage at Delhi's Indira Gandhi Airport, officials told ANI.

According to officials, the gold paste was concealed in his baggage, and it was discovered during a search by the Air Customs team.

The recovered gold paste contained an extracted quantity of approximately 1,893 grams of pure gold, valued at Rs. 99.53 lakhs, they said.

Earlier, the Customs Department confiscated over 1.52 kgs of gold, estimated to be worth over Rs 93.26 lakh, in two separate occurrences late Tuesday night at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. 

The customs agency also recovered gold weighing more than 500 gms from a traveller at Kerala's Cochin International Airport late Tuesday.

Customs Department late on Tuesday night seized over 1.52 kgs of gold, estimated to be worth over Ra 93.26 lakh, in two different separate incidents at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad city, officials said.

The official informed further that the seizures were made from the two passengers who had arrived in Hyderabad from Dubai.

Further investigation into the matter is underway, he said.

In the first incident, officials said based on passenger profiling and surveillance, they intercepted a passenger and took him to a special area inside the airport.

"During the screening, 810 grams of Gold were found concealed inside the passenger's garments. The cost of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 49.47 lakh," the officer said.

In the second incident, 717 grams of gold were found concealed inside the garments of the other passenger.

"The cost of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 43.70 lakh," he added.
