A 65-year-old man died after he fell into an open drain in Mumbai's Dahisar area early on Wednesday morning, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).


According to the civic body, the incident took place at Sawant Marg, behind the Dahisar-Borivali Railway Bridge in Dahisar. The deceased was identified as Omprakash Sharma (65).


The Mumbai Fire Brigade reached the spot around 1:50 am and rescued the 65-year-old man from the open nullah in Dahisar. He was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali, but the doctors declared him dead at 4:15 am.


"On arrival at the scene of the incident, it was learned from railway police officials that one person fell into an open nullah in Dahisar, with a depth of about 20 ft from ground level. The person was rescued safely by Mumbai Fire Brigade officials using rope and a stretcher. After the 65-year-old man was rescued he was shifted to Shatabdi hospital, where he was declared dead at 4.15 am," the civic body said.

In another incident, a partially decomposed body of an unidentified man was found on a beach in Gorai on Tuesday, police said, reported news agency PTI.

The body was spotted by a passerby at Kudven beach in Gorai in the morning, an official said, reported PTI.

The man appears to be in his 40s, and while nothing was recovered from his clothes, he was wearing a smartwatch, which might help ascertain his identity, he said, reported PTI.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, and an accidental death report has been registered, the official said, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, a newborn girl has been found abandoned at the doorsteps of a woman's house in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Tuesday, reported PTI.

The 29-year-old woman told the police that while she was in the kitchen of her house at Sainath Nagar in Louis Wadi area on Sunday night, she heard cries of a child, reported PTI.

When she went out, she found the baby girl lying on her doorsteps, an official from Wagle Estate police station said, reported PTI.

The woman alerted the police who reached her house and shifted the baby to the Thane Civil Hospital, he said.

Based on the woman's complaint, a case was registered under Indian Penal Code section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under 12 years by parent or caretaker), the official said, reported PTI.

Efforts were on to trace the child's parents, the police said.
