At least 58 patients, 20 of whom were receiving treatment for Covid-19, were shifted at Kasturbha Hospital after an LPG leak at around 11 am on Saturday. No one was reported injured in the incident. The fire brigade and the HPCL team were on the spot till late evening to decant the tank.

The gas leakage incident happened behind Ward No 30 of the hospital, where construction work has been on for the last seven months. “As a precautionary measure, patients from nearby five wards were shifted to other locations in the hospital itself. We had also alerted nearby civic hospitals like BYL nair Hospital, but we managed [to deal with the crisis on our own],” said a senior doctor.

The patients who were shifted from the five wards were recovering from fever, hepatitis and Covid-19. Two buildings on the Kasturba Hospital campus and one residential building outside of it had been vacated following the incident. Fire vehicles of the Mumbai Fire Brigade arrived on the spot. A team from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) was also called to seal the LPG tank.
