A 43-year-old man died while running for a city marathon on Sunday morning. The incident took place at around 7.30 am when deceased, identified as Stephen Menezes, collapsed while running for the Run India Run Total Sports 10K Challenge held at Borivali on Sunday. He was about to complete the race when he collapsed.

Soon after he collapsed, Stephen was rushed to Borivali's Karuna hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The victim was a father of two daughters and worked with Airtel in the HR department.

PSI Ramesh Sonawane, from Borivali police station, said, "The incident took place at around 7.30 am and the deceased had almost completed the entire stretch of the marathon. However, he collapsed near Shimpoli after which he was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Borivali were doctors declared him dead on arrival."

Officials further revealed that his body was taken to Bhagvati hospital for post mortem. Stephen was believed to be an active marathon enthusiast, taking part in various marathons including Mumbai, Vasai and many other running events.

When contacted, Shivaji Kachare, forensic expert from Nagpada Police Hospital, that heads the Bhagwati Post Mortem Centre, said that the 43-year-old might have fallen to the other co-morbid ailments he was already suffering from.

"The cause of death has been mentioned as acute myocardial infarction, which is a sudden cardiac arrest. There could be many other reasons leading to this, such as existing ailments spiking due to exercising and sudden pressure on the organs," said Kachare.

He added that individuals with multiple ailments should ideally undergo a complete check up before taking part in such extensive body workouts.

On Sunday, more than 2000 runners took part in the 10k run held at Borivali.
