The man has been identified as Dinesh Singh, who works as a cable operator in Chembur. He was arrested under section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc, of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code along with section 11 (A) under Animal Cruelty Act. The accused was arrested at 8.30 pm, following which he was released on a bail of Rs 5,000 immediately.

An officer from Pant Nagar police station said, “On Friday, the man’s daughter was going to buy a chocolate in the Kamraj Nagar area. That’s when the dog allegedly bit her on the leg.” When the weeping eight-year-old went home and complained to her father, he went and attacked the dog with a knife.

The complainant Shobha More said, “When I stepped out my house, I noticed that a man in a drunken state had stabbed the dog. When I enquired, he started yelling at me.” Singh, however, denied stabbing the dog. “Why would I attack a dog with a knife? I just hit him a couple of times with a bamboo stick for biting.”
