Mumbai: Boy who was pushed in front of running train recounts his horror

This is what 4-year-old Raja, who lost his right arm after being pushed in front of the train at Jogeshwari station by his mother’s lover, has told her; doctors say he is out of danger and is making a gradual recovery

Days after being thrown in front of an approaching train in Jogeshwari by his mother’s lover, 4-year-old Raja Sharma is making a gradual recovery at KEM hospital.

mid-day had reported on Wednesday that the boy’s mother, Anita, and her lover, Sandeep Bhaire had a fight in a garden in Malad on Republic Day. Fed up of Anita’s alleged infidelity, Sandeep had decided to kill Raja before committing suicide because he did not trust the ‘characterless’ and poor woman to take care of the boy after he was gone.

Sandeep had planned to jump in front of the train himself, but was paralysed by fear and decided against doing it after he saw Raja’s right hand getting chopped off under the train. “My son clearly told me that Sandeep uncle had pushed him,” Anita told mid-day at KEM hospital yesterday, where the doctors had operated on Raja immediately after he was admitted there on Monday.

“He doesn’t talk much to people and often vomits when fed,” said Anita. Doctors at the hospital said Raja is in pain and the bandages are causing him to feel uneasy and restless, but he is out of danger and is making a recovery. Due to the painkillers that are being given to him, he sleeps for long periods and the shock from the incident has ensured that he doesn’t speak in front of people he is unfamiliar with.

The child’s biological father, Akshay (name changed), reached the hospital soon after getting the news of his son’s condition. “My friend was in KEM hospital on Tuesday and noticed my son, that’s when he called and informed me. Till then, I had no clue about his condition”, said Akshay.

Besides losing his hand, Raja has suffered injuries on his head, which required around 10 stitches. “Thankfully, the cut isn’t that deep and the CT scans show that there isn’t any serious injury or damage to the brain,” said a family member. “Raja doesn’t let me go even for a minute. If I leave even for a bit, he starts calling out for me or his father. At least one of us is with him at all times,” said a worried Anita.

Future plans
The parents are really worried about their son’s future. “We can’t tell you what we have been through. The little one trusted that man blindly. All we want is for the boy’s future to get secured. We are just waiting for him to grow up so that a prosthetic arm can be attached,” said Vinod Derukhaka (44), a relative of the family.
