In the small hours of Sunday, Sohail decided to take a ride with two friends from his neighbourhood, Atul Bhatkade (40) and one Iftikar (18), to Nariman Point. When they neared the Rani Baug gate around 2.30 am, opposite which the Byculla police were carrying out a nakabandi, a constable gave them the stop sign with his hand.

Sohail, who was riding, apparently decided to make a dash for it. When Constable Shrirang Galugade (51) realised the boys were in no mood to stop they didn’t seem to slow down he tried to halt them physically. But Sohail ended up slamming the bike into him, losing balance. As the bike toppled, policemen ran to catch them and nabbed Sohail and Atul, while Iftikar managed to escape.

Galugade, who sustained injuries to his leg and stomach, was taken to J J Hospital, along with Sohail and Atul. Police Sub-Inspector Hanumant Bhingare said, “After Sohail and Atul were arrested, we asked them for Iftikar’s contact details. We called him up and asked him to come to the police station. He came in the morning at around 11.”

He added, “During interrogation, Sohail said he was riding too fast and could not control the bike, which is why he could not stop when the constable gave him the sign.” A complaint was registered against Sohail at Byculla police station under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

He was presented in Kila court, which gave him a bail for Rs 10,000, but since he failed to pay the penalty, he will be in jail until he does, cops said.
