A speeding truck rammed into a bike at Sakinaka in Mumbai around 8:30 pm on Friday. The biker, 28-year-old Yogesh Gaikwad, succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
Gaikwad was attempting to overtake the vehicle in front of him on the Andheri-Ghatkopar road, when the truck came speeding along from the opposite side and rammed into him. Gaikwad suffered severe head injuries and was immediately rushed to Rajabai hospital. However, the treatment could not save him.
While the truck driver halted several feet from the point of impact, the driver got down from his vehicle and fled. According to a report in the Hindustan Times, an officer of the Sakinaka police station was reported to have said, "Gaikwad’s eldest daughter is five years old, while son is just a year old."
Gaikwad was a resident of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar (West) and was employed at a private firm. The HT report also quotes senior inspector Avinash Dharmadhikari stating that a case has been registered against the absconding truck driver under section 304A of the Indian Penal Code. He is said to have added, "Once we get information on who the driver is, we will arrest him." Meanwhile, police officials have seized the truck involved in the accident.
