Honesty is not dead! Officials from the Pant Nagar police station yesterday felicitated a 54-year-old auto rickshaw driver for his honesty after he handed over a bag containing Rs 1 lakh that was left behind mistakenly by one of his passengers. Auto driver Vasant Raut, a resident of Ghatkopar, helped businessman Jitendra Gala reclaim his lost money.

According to Gala, he was on his way to the bank to deposit the money, but forgot the bag in the auto rickshaw. Upon realising his loss, Gala rushed to the Pant Nagar police station to register a complaint. However, he was taken by surprise to see Raut inside the police station with his moneybag.

Speaking to mid-day, Raut said, “I have been driving for the last 35 years, but this was for the first time that a passenger forgot his money in the auto. When I saw notes after opening the bag, I went back in the direction where he had alighted and searched for him.

But couldn’t locate him. So I went to the police station. As a token of appreciation for my honesty, senior police officers felicitated me inside the police station.” Inspector Siddheshwar Kamble and Assistant Inspector Rajan from Pant Nagar police station felicitated Raut for his deed.
