Mumbai: Abu Salem found guilty in Pradeep Jain murder case

A special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) court today convicted Abu Salem, Mehdi Hassan and builder Virendra Jhamb in the 1995 Pradeep Jain murder trial.

The special TADA court Judge G A Sanap pronounced the conclusion of the judgment in 1995 Pradeep Jain murder case in which accused Abu Salem, Mehdi Hassan and a builder Virendra Jhamb were facing a trial since 2006.

According to the police, on March 7, 1995, gangster Abu Salem had got Jain killed over a property dispute. Jain, a city-based builder, was shot dead outside his Juhu bungalow.

The Public Prosecutor and defence lawyers will make their submissions on the quantum of sentence tomorrow before the judge. This will be the first judgment in a case involving Salem in India after he was deported in 2005.

Naeem Khan and Siddiqui, another accused in the case, had turned approver but Siddiqui later turned hostile and is being tried separately. Salem and other accused in the case denied their role in the crime.

The prosecution had then declared Siddiqui hostile in the court because during his statement to the police he gave detailed information and later denied his and Salem's roles in the killing.

Since the trial began in 2006, the Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam has examined around 23 witnesses in the case while the defense has examined just one witness.

Salem, who is also facing a trial in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, was extradited from Portugal on November 11, 2005, after a prolonged legal battle and since has been in judicial custody.
