Moral policing in Ulhasnagar: Probe against cop who thrashed youth

The Thane Joint Commissioner of Police (law and order), VV Lakshmi Narayana, has ordered a detailed inquiry against the senior police inspector of Hill Line (Ulhasnagar) police station, Mohan Waghmare. This action has been taken after a video went viral on social media in which Waghmare, along with a constable, can be seen thrashing a youth and verbally abusing his female friend. The incident took place on Saturday.

Speaking to mid-day, Lakshmi Narayana said, "We have ordered an inquiry against the senior police inspector who appears in the video and the ACP Ambernath division is conducting it. After he submits the report, we shall look into the matter."

In the video that went viral, the cop is seen assaulting the youth and kicking him. The police alleged that they were driven into action after the locals of Prabhag Nagar in Ulhasnagar had carried out a morcha to the police station on Saturday, as young couples had allegedly indulged in obscene acts in that area.

Senior Police Inspector Waghmare said, "The locals of Prabhag Nagar area had lodged a complaint at the police station a couple of times. Later, on Saturday, some 30 people had come to the police station, so I went with them to the area to check the situation. I thought that the people themselves would start assaulting the couples. So I took the matter in my own hands and pushed them away."

He added, "In some situations, the locals claimed that whenever they confronted the couples, they would start threatening them, so we decided to take action against these couples."
