Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has learnt its lesson after facing a range of issues during the construction of Metro One or Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) corridor that led to cost escalation and delay. The authority has, for the Dahisar-Andheri East Metro corridor invited tenders to appoint a company to help them plan it correctly this time.

The company is expected to study the route and provide MMRDA a detailed design plan for which they will be paid around R11 crore. MMRDA Joint Project Director Dilip Kawatkar said, “We have invited tenders to appoint Detail Design Consultants for the Dahisar (East) to Andheri (East) metro-7 corridor. The consultant will have to oversee the depot design, proof-check designs for civil work and architectural finishing and station roofs including electrical and mechanical work.”

While constructing the VAG corridor, the MMRDA had to face issues like resettlement and rehabilitation of people, utility shifting, change in design of the piers etc, which had resulted in not only delay but also cost escalation. The consultant will also look after designing the car depot, re-checking the engineering designs of the alignment.

“This corridor is aimed at connecting areas that don’t have railway connectivity. Each metro train will have eight coaches.” said Kawatkar.
