Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024: FIR against Sanjay Raut's brother

The Mumbai Police on Tuesday registered a first information report (FIR) against Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) legislator Sunil Raut, is the brother of Member of Parliament (MP) Sanjay Raut, for allegedly making offensive remarks against his rival Shiv Sena candidate Suvarna Karanje, an officer said. The development comes after the National Commission for Women (NCW) called for police action against Sunil Raut. NCW condemned the alleged derogatory remarks made by Sunil Raut, who will be contesting against Karanje from the Vikhroli Assembly Constituency and said the comments are "unacceptable and contrary to the values of equity and equality" enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 will be held on November 20. Reportedly, Sunil Raut, while addressing an election rally in Tagore Nagar area on October 27, called Karanje a "bali ka bakra (goat)". The comments were captured on video and subsequently went viral on social media, news agency PTI reported. In a statement, the NCW expressed its strong disapproval, stating that such remarks were not only unacceptable but also undermine the principles of equality and respect for women. The commission also emphasised that the police's filing of a case was a crucial step, as such statements could damage the electoral atmosphere and harm the dignity of women. The NCW took suo motu cognisance of the matter and urged the Director General of Police, Maharashtra, to take stringent action and submit a detailed report within three working days. According to PTI, Sanjay Raut dismissed the case as a "baseless attempt to target" his party. He accused the authorities of filing false cases against Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders and workers, vowing to settle scores after the results of the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 are out on November 23. "False cases will be lodged against us, and we may be jailed. We are not afraid of this. We expect more cases, but we will settle accounts after November 23," Raut said. Cancel Sunil Raut's candidacy: Shiv Sena Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena, headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, demanded that Sunil Raut's candidacy for the Vikhroli seat be cancelled on the grounds that his behaviour was "unfit" for a public representative. Karanje, who has served as a three-time corporator, also criticised Sunil Raut's conduct and challenged him to a face-to-face debate, stating that he had contributed far less to the area compared to her own achievements.  According to PTI, she also recalled a previous instance in which Sunil Raut had insulted her by comparing her to "Kaikeyi", the stepmother of Lord Ram, a reference she described as deeply disrespectful. Karanje further alleged that Raut had made a pattern of making disparaging remarks about women. In a similar incident last week, an FIR was filed against Shiv Sena (UBT) lawmaker Arvind Sawant for referring to Shaina NC, who is Shiv Sena's candidate for the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024 from Mumbadevi, as "imported maal (imported goods)".

2008 Malegaon Blast Case: NIA court issues warrant against Pragya Thakur

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Tuesday issued a bailable warrant against former Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) lawmaker Pragya Singh Thakur in connection with the 2008 Malegaon Blast Case. Thakur, who is an accused in the case, failed to appear for the proceedings, prompting the court to demand her presence. The warrant is "returnable" by November 13, meaning that Thakur must appear before the court by that date to have the warrant cancelled. Her continued absence could further complicate the legal proceedings and delay the trial.Meanwhile, in previous court sessions, Pragya Singh Thakur's lawyer had filed an application for exemption from her court appearance, citing medical reasons, specifically her ongoing struggle with cervical spondylitis and migraines. The court had granted her exemptions based only on these medical reports, though it raised concerns that her absences were "hampering" proceedings and "delaying" the trial's progress.Additionally, the NIA special court also reviewed a trailer for the upcoming film "Match Fixing," which is scheduled to be released on November 15. The court noted that this movie might touch upon themes related to the Malegaon blast case. The release of this movie is a violation of an earlier order of the court while the matter is still pending. The court directed the NIA to respond by November 6. Should the agency fail to provide a satisfactory reply, the court may take further steps and issue orders. On September 29, 2008, six people were killed and over 100 others injured after an explosive device placed on a motorcycle exploded in Maharashtra's Malegaon city, in Nashik town.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Sena (UBT) expels five functionaries for 'anti-party activities' ahead of polls

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has expelled five functionaries for 'anti-party activities' ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly election 2024, sources said on Tuesday, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, Rupesh Mhatre, one of those who faced the axe, is a former MLA, and had filed nomination papers as an independent from Bhiwandi East assembly seat. He claimed that he withdrew from the race, yet faced action. According to the seat-sharing arrangement of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for the November 20 Maharashtra Assembly polls, Samajwadi Party's sitting MLA Rais Shaikh is the official candidate of the Opposition alliance from the constituency. Vishwas Nandekar, a party functionary from Yavatmal district, Chandrakant Ghughal, Sanjay Awari and Prasad Thackeray were also expelled on Monday for anti-party activities. "The party asked me to withdraw and I abided by the instruction. Yet, I was sacked. This is the price for staying loyal and being with the party in its bad days," Mhatre told PTI, as per the PTI. Those helping BJP are Maharashtra's 'enemies', polls all about love vs betrayal of state: Uddhav Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday hit the campaign trail and pitched the November 20 Maharashtra Assembly election 2024 as a battle between those who love Maharashtra and the ones who betray it as he reflected on the 2022 split in the party. Uddhav Thackeray hit out at his former ally BJP and its partners, saying those helping the national party are "enemies" of Maharashtra as he made a slew of promises to voters, including building a temple of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in every district if the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) comes to power, reported the PTI. Addressing his first rally of the 2024 assembly polls in Radhanagri in Kolhapur district -- the constituency of Prakash Abitkar, one of the 40 Shiv Sena MLAs who rebelled against his leadership -- he said those who love the state are aligned with the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi which comprises the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP (SP). Those helping the BJP, a constituent of the ruling Mahayuti bloc, are "enemies" of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray remarked. Further attacking his one-time ally, the former CM accused the BJP of "selling" Maharashtra to Gujarat, where it is in power. Uddhav Thackeray claimed his government was toppled in June 2022 because he did not allow the BJP to harm Maharashtra and said not a single industrial project moved out of the state when the MVA was in office under his leadership. "(Maharashtra assembly poll) is a fight between those who love the state and the ones who betray it," Thackeray told the gathering. (with PTI inputs)

How WR managed Diwali and Chhath festival passenger rush at Bandra Terminus

The Western Railway on Tuesday said that it managed a passenger rush of around 3.10 lakh during the Diwali and Chhath festival at Bandra Terminus in suburban Mumbai. In an official statement, the Western Railway said that it was successful in managing the surge of passenger traffic during the Diwali and Chhath festival rush at Bandra Terminus, which spanned from October 24 to November 4, 2024.  The statement further said that this year, the Western Railway undertook a series of strategic measures to accommodate an overwhelming influx of travelers, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for an estimated 3.10 lakh passengers. In response to the heightened demand, Western Railway operated a total of 249 trains from Bandra Terminus during the festive rush. This included 30 holiday special trains specifically designed to cater to the festival rush, along with 27 reserved passenger trains and three fully unreserved trains that provided essential service to general class travelers.  To further ease passenger experiences at Bandra Terminus, the Western Railway implemented a variety of facilities and services. A total of 70 License Sahayak staff were deployed in two shifts daily to assist passengers, the statement said. Around 32 ticket checking personnel ensured security at entry and exit points around the clock. One extra ticket counter was opened, and two additional night shifts were introduced to further streamline ticketing operations. Prominent information banners and standees displaying details of special trains were strategically placed throughout the station to keep travelers informed. Understanding the potential for overcrowding, Western Railway imposed temporary restrictions on the sale of platform tickets until November 8, 2024. This measure was aimed at controlling crowd sizes on the platforms and to facilitate smoother passenger movements within the station. Passengers were reminded of their free allowance for luggage, which varies by ticket class. This allowance is designed to prevent excess baggage from causing additional congestion and delays.  However, it is crucial to note that specific items, such as scooters and bicycles, are excluded from this allowance or with consignments which have maximum dimensions of 100 cm x 100 cm x 70 cm, as per the Western Railway. To enhance passenger safety, Western Railway issued directives to minimize the stacking of parcel consignments on platforms, ensuring that these items do not obstruct passenger flow. This initiative will remain in place until November 8, 2024. To manage the influx of travelers efficiently, additional personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) were deployed to facilitate orderly queue formations, thereby preventing any mishaps or dangerous situations. Additional 15 Ticket Checking Staff, 32 RPF staff, 13 GRP staff are deployed at the station. Recognising the need for adequate waiting space, Bandra Terminus established a spacious holding area measuring 4,200 square feet near the main station building. The area is equipped with necessary amenities, including adequate lighting and fans to ensure a comfortable waiting environment, drinking water and toilet facilities. Public announcement system to keep passengers updated on train movements. The holding area is designed to alleviate congestion on the platforms and ensure a smooth entry process for passengers boarding their trains. Additional RPF and GRP personnel, along with scout and guide teams, were appointed to monitor trains heading to northern states of India, particularly in general and sleeper coaches. These teams worked diligently to manage crowds and assist passengers throughout their journeys. In addition, the Crime Prevention and Detection Squad (CPDS) teams from RPF and GRP conducted patrols in plain clothes to deter suspicious activities and prevent theft. Round-the-clock CCTV surveillance was implemented across the station, ensuring that any increase in crowd density was promptly addressed. To ensure that passengers were well-informed about the additional train services, the Western Railway launched an extensive publicity campaign.  Regular tweets, social media updates, newspaper advertisements, and press releases were disseminated to keep the public updated on the special trains and facilities available for the festival season. Vasai waste collector kills co-workers, then dies of heart attack

A 45-year-old garbage collector identified as Raju was allegedly beaten to death by an elderly man in Vasai on Friday (November 1), who later died of a heart attack two days after the incident on Sunday.   The accused, identified as Prakash Merwa, 75, also a garbage collector, attempted to dispose of the evidence by setting the victim’s body on fire near a foot overbridge and fled the scene. The police said that they received a call about the fire, and only after reaching the spot, they discovered the body of the victim. The discovery of the partly burned body initially led the Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP) to register an Accidental Death Report (ADR). Upon examining the scene and noticing suspicious blood clots, an autopsy was conducted, which revealed head injury as the cause of death, following which a case was registered and a thorough investigation was launched.  The police said that they examined CCTV footage and spoke to residents where the alleged incident took place.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Kishore Shinde (GRP) said that further probe into the matter revealed that Raju, at the time of the incident, was accompanied by other scrap collectors identified as Ankit Teniram, 25, and Babban Channa Roy, 35. The police said that the duo were detained for investigation and revealed Merwa and Raju had a scuffle, and Raju, who was in an inebriated condition, picked up a bamboo stick to struck Merwa, but the latter snatched the stick and beat Raju to death with it before fleeing the scene.  After the police began searching for the accused following the confession from the duo, it was discovered that he had died due to a cardiac arrest on Friday under the jurisdiction of Waliv Police Station, said senior inspector Angha Satavse from Vasai government railway police (GRP).
