The police said the woman, identified as Humeira Patka, was arrested and a blood test showed that she was not drunk at the time of the accident.
Around 12.45 am, the police control room received frantic calls from Dongri residents saying that a red car had knocked down several people and the woman at the wheel appeared to be drunk. The Dongri police who were out with full strength for a routine combing operation rushed to the spot.
“When we reached Rehmaniya Hotel, we found a mob of around 500 residents around a red car. There were 3 women in the car,” said an officer from Dongri police station. “Women cops rushed forward and brought the women out, while the other staff tried to pacify the angry crowd,” said the officer.
Many onlookers told the police that the car had run over 5 to 6 people and one of them had died. Police teams visited nearby hospitals and found the claims to be untrue. “Our teams confirmed that 2 persons were injured. One sustained injuries on the legs and the other on the head. Their statements were recorded,” said Shabana Sheikh, senior inspector of Dongri police station. “Both are out of danger and stable.”
