Rashmi Shukla—the first woman DGP of Maharashtra Police—officially assumed her role on Tuesday evening, succeeding Rajnish Seth. Shukla took over from Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, who held additional charge after Seth’s retirement on December 31, 2023.

Shukla, who arrived from Delhi and assumed her duties at the Maharashtra Police headquarters, said that women’s safety is going to be her topmost priority. Addressing the media, Shukla spoke of Maharashtra’s strong reputation for law and order, pledging to uphold it. “Starting on a positive note, women’s safety will be my topmost priority,” she said.

When asked about why Sajjan Jindal’s statements have not been recorded in the rape case he has been named in, she said that no one is above the law and that she will take up the matter with the Mumbai police commissioner.
