The Nalasopara police have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend after sedating her, recording a video of the act and using it to pressurise her into sleeping with his boss, who has also been booked.

According to the Nalasopara police, the arrested accused has been identified as Rehan Sardar, while his employed Asjad Dabre, a builder, is yet to be arrested. The survivor, a 20-year-old woman, told mid-day that she had severed ties with Sardar after finding out that he was already married.

“We were at the Rajodi beach on August 13 when I took his phone to click some pictures and found his wedding pictures instead. We had an argument after which I ended the relationship and came back home. However, he kept pestering me to meet him. When I refused, he uploaded a picture of us together on social media, and threatened to post more pictures if I didn’t see him. Finally, I met him at a lodge in Nalasopara on August 15,” she said.

She added that during this meeting, she started feeling drowsy after sipping water. When she woke up, she realised she had been sexually assaulted. Sardar confirmed this, and said he would delete the pictures and videos of the act only if she slept with Dabre. Finally, when the survivor’s mother, after seeing that she was unusually silent, inquired after her well-being, the survivor broke down and confided in her mother.

Sardar was subsequently arrested. Rupali Nandvikar, a local social activist, accused the police of favouring Sardar, after he was taken to court in a private vehicle instead of a police SUV following his arrest. However, Police Sub Inspector Milind Tayde, Nalasopara police station, said, “We use private vehicles if police vehicles are unavailable at the given time. This was done with the knowledge of our seniors.”
