Has the ‘Modi wave’, as named by the saffron camp, fizzled out unlike previous years? The trend in this year’s general election appears to be hinting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is losing its grip over the state.

According to the statistics, of the 19 parliamentary constituencies that Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited in Maharashtra, the BJP and Mahayuti candidates in 15 of them have lost. This includes 18 rallies/public meetings and one road show. The saffron alliance led by Modi managed to win only three of the constituency seats where the PM visited.

Of the 48 seats in the state, the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), NCP (Ajit Pawar) and partners, together known as Mahayuti Aghadhi, managed to secure only 18 seats. This is down from the Lok Sabha elections of 2019, where the BJP and undivided Shiv Sena alliance bagged 41 seats.

Taking a jibe at Modi, Uddhav Thackeray at a press conference said, “In the majority of constituencies where PM Modi visited, the BJP and Mahayuti candidates lost. Hence we wish that Modiji must visit more and more, it will benefit us.”

“This is because the local issues gained more importance across Maharashtra. Consolidation of minority votes showed more impact in Maharashtra as they got a good option of MVA. The discussion of Maratha reservation, as well as changing the Constitution, became effective,” said political analyst Abhay Deshpande.
