Maharashtra Covid updates: Maharashtra on Monday reported as many as 16 new cases of Covid-19, the state health department said in a bulletin. 


No death related to the virus was reported on October 2, the bulletin said.


The fresh cases took the overall infection tally in the state to 81,71,632, as per the bulletin.


It said that 14 patients were discharged on Monday. A total number of  80,22,933 Covid-19 patients have been so far discharged after full recovery. The recovery rate in the state is now at 98.18 per cent. 

The state currently has 138 active cases, the state health department said in the bulletin.

The bulletin said that at present the dominant variant of Covid is Omicron XBB.1.16. Total 1,733 cases were found to be infected with this variant. There were 19 deaths reported among the cases of this variant. 

The bulletin further said that since 1st Jan 2023, 131 Covid-19 deaths have been recorded. 70.99 per cent of these deaths have occurred in individuals above 60 years of age, 83 per cent of the deceased had comorbidities and 17 per cent did not have any comorbidity. 

Meanwhile, India on Monday logged 36 new coronavirus infections while the active cases have been recorded at 431, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

The death toll has been recorded at 5,32,032, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The country's Covid case tally is 4.49 crore (4,49,98,874).

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has increased to 4,44,66,411 and the national recovery rate stands at 98.81 per cent, according to the health ministry's website.

The case fatality rate stands at 1.18 per cent.

According to the ministry's website, 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far. 

Nobel Prize in medicine for development of effective mRNA vaccines against Covid-19

The Nobel Prize in medicine has been awarded to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman for discoveries that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against Covid-19.

Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Nobel Assembly, announced the award Monday in Stockholm.

The Nobel Prizes carry a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor (USD 1 million). The money comes from a bequest left by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896.
