You must stay firm, encourage us: Sanjay Raut to Sharad Pawar on his retirement

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday described NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of parliamentary politics and expressed disapproval of any plans by him to retire from active politics. According to news agency PTI, while speaking to reporters, Sanjay Raut emphasised that, at present, no Indian leader possesses as much parliamentary experience as Sharad Pawar, 83, who has a political career spanning for nearly six decades. Sanjay Raut revealed that Sharad Pawar had previously expressed his desire to retire from active politics to him personally.  "I told him not to dwell on such thoughts. It's experience, not age, that truly matters. His presence in parliamentary politics is like that of a guide and a lighthouse," said the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader. "He has spoken of retirement publicly before. His vast experience is a great benefit to newcomers in politics. It seems that he has been troubled by the state of politics for some time. He has witnessed the kind of politics played by Delhi's politicians in Maharashtra and across the country, yet this pillar of strength still stands firm," Raut added. According to PTI, Sanjay Raut referred to the 83-year-old Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of Indian politics, drawing a parallel with the venerable figure from the epic Mahabharata. 'We must save Maharashtra and India' Both Sanjay Raut and Sharad Pawar serve as members of the Rajya Sabha, and their respective parties are part of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra and the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc at the national level. According to PTI, Raut further stated that the country still needs strong leaders such as Pawar, who has held numerous significant roles throughout his political career, including serving as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Union Minister for Defence and Agriculture, and heading cricket bodies such as the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the International Cricket Council (ICC). "You (Pawar) must remain steadfast and inspire people like us to continue the fight. We must save Maharashtra and India, and we will need leaders like you to do that," he added. Hinting at his potential retirement from parliamentary politics, Pawar said on Tuesday that he would have to consider whether to seek another term in the Rajya Sabha once his current tenure ends in 2026. The veteran politician, who had a long association with the Congress party, has won 14 elections during his career. He first entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1967 and became a state minister just five years later. (With PTI inputs)

Rahul Gandhi is against Ambedkar's ideology, alleges Maharashtra BJP chief

Ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra elections 2024, Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday alleged that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is opposed to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's ideology and does a "drama" of protecting the Constitution, reported news agency PTI. Bawankule also claimed that several "urban Naxals" were trying to incite people against the country, and asked why Rahul Gandhi's 'Samvidhan Samman Sammelan', scheduled in Nagpur on Wednesday ahead of the Maharashtra elections 2024, was a "closed door" event, reported PTI. The Congress denied the charge, saying the BJP was spreading a "false narrative" about Gandhi's event. Notably, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis has in a recent interview stated that Gandhi is surrounded by "urban Naxals", reported PTI. To a query on it, Bawankule said, "More than 165 urban Naxal organisations are creating anger against the country among people and in the society and are spoiling the atmosphere," reported PTI. "Rahul Gandhi is opposed to Babasaheb Ambedkar's ideology and does a drama of protecting the Constitution," he claimed, reported PTI. The BJP leader sought to know why Gandhi was scheduled to hold a "closed door" event in Nagpur and not allow media in the programme. "On one hand, they talk about protecting the Constitution and on the other hand, they are suppressing rights given to the media by the Constitution," Bawankule said, reported PTI. He also said the BJP has suspended 40 office-bearers for six years for anti-party activities and similar action will be taken against more people if they are found indulging in such activities during the poll campaign. Countering BJP's allegations, Congress state spokesperson Atul Londhe said Rahul Gandhi's speech at the 'Samvidhan Samman Sammelan' event will be streamed live for everyone and that media could not be accommodated due to space constraints in the programme hall, reported PTI. Leader of opposition in the assembly Vijay Wadettiwar said, "It is not a political event, but a social programme organised by various social organisations. The BJP is spreading a false narrative about the event," reported PTI. The Maharashtra assembly elections 2024 will be held on November 20, with the counting of votes for all 288 constituencies scheduled for November 23. The opposition MVA coalition, comprising Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party (SCP), aims to reclaim power in the state, challenging the Mahayuti alliance, which includes Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Ajit Pawar-led NCP. In the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena secured 56, and Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP won 122 seats, Shiv Sena 63, and Congress 42. (With inputs from PTI)

BJP affirms support for Shinde’s candidate, distances itself from Nawab Malik

Ahead of the Maharashtra elections 2024, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay emphasised that the BJP would campaign for Eknath Shinde's candidate Suresh Patil in Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar and would have no association with Nawab Malik, reported news agency ANI. NCP's Mahayuti's alliance partners, BJP and Shiv Sena have expressed their opposition to Malik's candidature. Nawab Malik has expressed confidence in winning the upcoming Maharashtra elections 2024 from the Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar assembly seat. Keshav Upadhyay said, "I have made our role clear concerning Nawab Malik. We have said that we won't campaign there. We will campaign for Eknath Shinde's candidate in that constituency. We will not campaign for Nawab Malik and we will not have any association with him. He has been out on bail and he has not been proven innocent. The case is going on," reported ANI. BJP's Mumbai chief Ashish Shelar already clarified that the party would not be campaigning in support of Nationalist Congress Party's (Ajit Pawar) Nawab Malik. Keshav Upadhyay also strongly objected to Arvind Sawant's remarks on BJP leader Shaina NC and Sunil Raut's remarks against Shiv Sena Shinde faction's Vikhroli assembly candidate Suvarna Karanje. He further said, "It shows the mental bankruptcy of the leaders of Maha Vikas Aghadi. Yesterday in Kolhapur when a woman candidate tried to take back her nomination a Congress leader asked that if she did not have the courage then why did she fill the form. Mahayuti is thinking about women empowerment while MVA leaders are showing how low they can stoop to," reported ANI. Earlier in a no-holds-bar-attack on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sunil Raut over his alleged comment on a women candidate, Shiv Sena candidate from Mumbadevi seat, Shaina NC on Tuesday said that it is time that the women in Maharashtra wake up and raise their voice against such "regressive" comments. Reportedly, Sunil Raut while addressing an election rally called the Shiv Sena Shinde faction's Vikhroli assembly candidate Suvarna Karanje a "goat". Reacting to the remark made by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, Shaina NC said, "This is the most regressive comment coming from Sunil Raut, on one hand, they call us 'Bakri' and used the word 'Maal'. Look at the mind and thought process. On one hand, we have a PM who respects women...you have a CM who has empowered us with the 'Ladki Bahin' scheme and on the other hand, we have 'Maha Vinas Aghadi' where you have somebody referring to us as objects," reported ANI. Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered against Sunil Raut, the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate from Vikroli constituency and brother of Sanjay Raut for his reported objectionable comments against a woman candidate of chief minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The Maharashtra elections 2024 will be held in a single phase on November 20 with counting of votes held on November 23. In the 2019 assembly elections in Maharashtra, the BJP won 105 seats, the Shiv Sena 56, and the Congress 44. In 2014, the BJP secured 122 seats, the Shiv Sena 63, and the Congress 42.
