The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a low-pressure system in the southeast and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea has evolved into a depression. Forecasts suggest that it will further intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 21, and potentially escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by October 22. The trajectory of the storm is projected to move north-north-westwards, ultimately heading toward the South Oman and adjoining Yemen coasts.

Earlier, the IMD had issued a weather warning for Mumbai in light of the developing cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea. However, the latest updates indicate that the city may not experience significant impacts, as the cyclonic storm is expected to gain strength and veer towards the southern coasts of Oman and adjoining Yemen, rather than affecting Mumbai.
According to the IMD, the depression over the southwest Arabian Sea has shifted westwards and is currently situated about 900 kilometres east-southeast of Socotra, Yemen, and approximately 1,170 kilometres southeast of Salalah Airport in Oman. Over the next 24 hours, it is likely to transform into a cyclonic storm, posing potential challenges to regions in its path.
IMD's alert for Mumbai
IMD had previously issued a warning about weather changes in Mumbai due to a possible cyclonic storm which is developing in the Arabian Sea. The IMD's weather update, released on Monday on social media, indicated the possible formation of a low-pressure area in the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea within the next 48 hours.
The period from October to December is considered favourable for the development of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, primarily due to the warmer ocean temperatures during this time.
Should a tropical storm emerge in the Indian seas, it will be designated as "Tej," adhering to the naming conventions for cyclones in the Indian Ocean region.
According to the weather office, "A low-pressure area has formed over the Southeast and adjoining East-central Arabian Sea on the morning of 18th October. It is expected to move in a West-Northwest direction and intensify into a Depression around 21st October."
