IMD issues severe weather warning; ‘red’ alert in Mumbai, Thane

The torrential rains over the weekend claimed 30 lives in the metropolis

As Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad continue to witness heavy spells of rain, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its warning from an orange alert to a red alert on Monday.

According to K S Hosalikar, senior official at IMD, Thane and Navi Mumbai received over 120mm of rainfall in the last 6 hours, whereas Mumbai city received 40-100mm of rainfall during the same period.

After the non-stop spell of rainfall from the early hours of Monday, severe weather warning has been issued for the Konkan belt. The torrential rains over the weekend claimed 30 lives in Mumbai. On Monday, the Raigad disaster management department said three people were feared drowned at separate places in the district.

According to the IMD, the red alert indicates “extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in ghat areas". It said extremely heavy rainfall means a precipitation of more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours. An ''orange alert'' indicates "heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places", with precipitation between 64.5mm and 204.4 mm, the MeT office said.
