Pranita Wankhede, 29, a peon from a private office returned to studies after a gap of almost 13 years. But the recent developments with regard to the evaluation of SSC scores are making her wonder if the efforts are worth it? She’s one of the thousands of candidates who are appearing for SSC exams privately and are in a fix because of the 50:50 formula where 50 per cent weightage is given to class IX marks and the rest to Std X performance so far.

Amid the unprecedented circumstances brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the government introduced the new evaluation system. But students appearing for the exam privately do not have the previous year’s marks. They have demanded clarity on how their scores will be calculated.

“My seniors at work encouraged me to retry for SSC as it would help me get a better-paying job. I was motivated about studying and do not want it all to go to waste,” said Wankhede, adding that in April, she received some question papers from the exam centre for open-book tests to submit for internal assessments. “We guess those could be used for internal assessments. But there is absolutely no record of us for Std IX assessment,” Wankhede said. Another candidate, Ganesh Sawant, 19, said, “Whenever we ask at the exam centre, we are told that as soon as there is clarity, we will be informed. But there is no official communication as yet. Each of us is appearing for SSC now because circumstances forced us to quit studying earlier. Now we should not be treated unfairly.”

The SSC score this year is going to be based on a combination of the academic performance in Std IX and Std X. As such, the internal assessment of students is of utmost importance. Amid the pandemic, when limited digital access has already caused academic losses to many, it is being pondered how schools will ensure marks for internal assessment. But for private candidates, there is no recourse.
