Mumbai and its surrounding districts have received substantial rains in the previous 24 hours, providing relief from the hot and humid weather, officials said on Sunday.
Heavy rains caused a road collapse in the Palghar district, slowing traffic on the important Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway for over four hours on Sunday morning. According to a police control room officer, repair work, including pipeline maintenance, was in progress when a part of the Maljipada road collapsed owing to heavy rain, reported PTI.

According to the report, traffic came to a halt, and progress was delayed on both sides of the roadway. Some cars delayed in the traffic gridlock since 5:30 am stated that no agency was responding to the problem.
Other districts in Maharashtra, such as Thane, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Satara, and Jalgaon, have also experienced heavy rainfall in the last day. during 60 mm of rain fell in Mumbai during the course of 24 hours, concluding at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The Colaba observatory in south Mumbai recorded 67 mm, while the Santacruz observatory near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport reported 64 mm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the report added.
Per the PTI report, the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius, 1.1 degrees above normal, and a minimum of 24.3 degrees Celsius, 2.9 degrees below normal. The Santacruz observatory measured a maximum temperature of 36.4 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees above normal, and a minimum of 25.5 degrees Celsius, 1.9 degrees below normal.
Several agriculturally important areas received significant rainfall, including Satara (91 mm), Nashik (64 mm), Ahmednagar (57 mm), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (51 mm), and Jalgaon (41 mm), according to IMD.
Thane and Palghar districts also received severe overnight rains, causing waterlogging in several locations. Thane city saw 37.06 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, with the highest precipitation coming between 12:30 am and 1:30 am (16.76 mm) and between 3:30 am and 4:30 am (10.93 mm), Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell chief, Yasin Tadvi told PTI.
IMD announces onset of monsoon over Mumbai
The India Meteorological Department on Sunday announced the onset of southwest monsoon over Mumbai. IMD's announcement came after the city and surrounding areas experienced spells of moderate to heavy showers.
"Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Maharashtra, Telangana, and some parts of south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha, and some more parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh today, 8 June 2024," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had stated in a post on X.
Meanwhile, addressing the question on Friday about monsoon arrival in Mumbai, an official had earlier said, "The next four days are quite favourable for the advancement of the monsoon in Maharashtra and it is expected to arrive in Mumbai by June 9 - June 10."
