The districts of Thane and Palghar in Maharashtra experienced heavy overnight rainfall, resulting in waterlogging in several areas, officials reported on Sunday.
Thane city saw tree branches falling in some locations due to the heavy rains. In the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, Thane city recorded 37.06 mm of rainfall. The heaviest downpour was between 12:30 am and 1:30 am, with 16.76 mm of rain, followed by another significant spell of 10.93 mm between 3:30 am and 4:30 am, according to Yasin Tadvi, head of the Thane Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell, reported PTI.

According to the report, the persistent rain led to waterlogging in certain areas of Thane noted an official from the district disaster control room.
Neighbouring Palghar also experienced heavy rainfall, but no incidents were reported due to the downpour, according to Vivekanand Kadam, chief of the district disaster control cell, the PTI report stated.
IMD announces onset of monsoon over Mumbai
The India Meteorological Department on Sunday announced the onset of southwest monsoon over Mumbai. IMD's announcement came after the city and surrounding areas experienced spells of moderate to heavy showers.
"Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Maharashtra, Telangana, and some parts of south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha, and some more parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh today, 8 June 2024," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had stated in a post on X.
"Conditions are favourable for further advance of the Southwest Monsoon into remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai) and Telangana during the next 2-3 days," the IMD added.
Meanwhile, addressing the question on Friday about monsoon arrival in Mumbai, an official had earlier said, "The next four days are quite favourable for the advancement of the monsoon in Maharashtra and it is expected to arrive in Mumbai by June 9 - June 10."

Light to moderate rainfall has affected several parts of the country, easing the fierce heatwave that gripped many regions in recent days. Rainfall caused waterlogging in parts of Guwahati, and rain also lashed Pune in Maharashtra, Kullu and Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Chennai, and Hubbali in Karnataka, stated an ANI report.
The report added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting on Sunday to review the ongoing heatwave situation and preparedness for the monsoon onset. This year's monsoon onset is two days earlier than usual, with the typical date being 1 June. Kerala experienced widespread pre-monsoon rains this year.
In 2023, rainfall across the country during the monsoon season (June-September) was 94 per cent of its long-period average, the report added.
