'Gaikwad did 24-hour shifts. Once home, he would spend most of the time sleeping. He had been depressed after his wife left him. We often heard theme quarrelling, but for few minutes. A few months ago, he told us that he was going Solapur and settle the matter,' said a neighbour

Headless body case: Accused cop was such a friendly person, say neighbours

The couple lived in building no. 40 at Worli police quarters

At the Worli police quarters, where the suspect couple lived, neighbours are finding it impossible to believe that the “ever-friendly” constable was up to something like this. Shiv Shankar Gaikwad had been at building number 40 living with wife Monali, his mother and his sister for the past 2-3 years.

“Gaikwad did 24-hour shifts. Once home, he would spend most of the time sleeping. He had been depressed after his wife left him. We often heard theme quarrelling, but for few minutes. A few months ago, he told us that he was going Solapur and settle the matter,” said a neighbour.

Another resident, who moved in a year ago, said they were very close with the Gaikwads. “We never thought he would kill someone for his wife.” A society resident told mid-day, “Gaikwad’s mother also told us that his son’s life got destroyed due to his wife but he was trying to put all differences aside.”

The cop apparently kept asking colleagues about new cases recently solved by the police. “We don’t know if he was trying to get an update on the crime he committed,” said a resident.
