It is unlucky number 13, they say, but the figure has proved hugely lucky for COVID-afflicted plasma recipients, thanks to Andheri resident Bhavesh Bhanushali. Bhavesh donated his plasma for the 13th time on April 15 at a hospital in the western suburbs, living up to his label of ‘plasma warrior’ and turning his challenging COVID journey into one that has brought health and healing to others.

Bhavesh, 34, rolled the year back to June 2020. He said, “I experienced COVID-like symptoms. I used to go to work. I own a cloud kitchen, which is essentially a food delivery place and has no space for dine-in. Orders are taken online or on calls. My labour force used to stay on site, but I needed to commute to work.”

Though Bhavesh’s test result was negative, he did have symptoms like a racking, continual dry cough, and was struggling to breathe properly. The CT scan showed that the lungs were affected to a considerable degree. Though the test was negative, he had COVID pneumonia.

Speaking about his COVID experience, the feisty young entrepreneur said, “I was admitted to a hospital, and was in a bad state.” Bhavesh did recover though, rest and recuperation later, he had time to reflect and had a changed perspective towards life.

“I took so much joy in going home, in fact I could not believe I was actually leaving the hospital. I started enjoying each and every second of my life, valuing every moment and relationships and friendships became even more important to me. I revelled in the fact that I could hear music again and go back to my usual routine,” he said.

Bhavesh’s family doctor sent him a link for Prana Foundation, working in the space of plasma donation for COVID patients. “The links had details about where, what and how I could donate. I became a donor to save lives. The doctors saved my life, and now I could give something to others in this fight,” added Bhavesh.

With 13 donations done, he said, “Effort must be made to raise awareness about plasma donation. Those between 18 and 55 years who can donate must come forward and not be afraid of it. I am a small drop in the ocean, but like they say in a drought, every drop counts,” he concluded.
