Admission to prominent city colleges may be off limits for students who scored below 90 per cent in Std XII. As the first merit list was declared on Tuesday for degree first year admissions, a huge rise was seen in the cut-offs of many city colleges.

The colleges, however, were expecting this hike, with much increase in Std XII results this year. While Commerce stream has seen 4-5 per cent increase in cut-offs in popular colleges, there was a 7-8 per cent rise in Arts stream.
“There is definitely a major hike in cut-offs, but this was expected after the Std XII result. It is really important now that we attain normalcy soon, otherwise this will become a benchmark,” said Dr. Ashok Wadia, principal of Jai Hind College, where Arts cut-off is over 96 per cent.
Principal of another popular college said, “Merit list cut-offs are really going high each year, but it is a question for all to introspect if these batches are really so brainy or we have to review the evaluation system. It is very important to figure out the changes before there comes a time that cut-offs will be 100 per cent.”
Around 800 colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University declared their first merit list. The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) result itself had seen a huge jump of 8.57 since last year. Moreover, this year there was a whopping increase in the number of students scoring more than 90 per cent. The no-exam evaluation formula had worked well this year.
