COVID-19: Mumbai number drops below 6,000 on second consecutive day

After a dip in the deaths reported on Saturday, Sunday saw the death toll of the state cross the 800 mark, the highest ever figure recorded. The number of new cases reported stayed over 66K, while the city numbers dropped below 6,000 for the second consecutive day. The number of discharged patients was higher than the new cases in the city.


The state recorded 66,191 new cases taking the total tally of Maharashtra to 42.95 lakh. The COVID-related deaths recorded in the state were 832 on Sunday taking the total to 64,760 deaths in all.


Mumbai city saw 5,498 fresh cases, while the MMR recorded 14,296 cases. The Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivali Corporation recorded 1,087, 599 and 1,425 cases respectively in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. 


The state’s recovery rate stands at 82.19 per cent with 61,450 patients discharged. The total number of active COVID patients in the state is currently 6,98,354. The state saw 2.57 crore laboratory samples collected till date since March 2020 out of which 42.95 lakh tested positive with 16.68 per cent positivity ratio.

Mumbai’s recovery rate now stands at 86 per cent while the doubling rate now stands at 58 days, both of which have been improving since the last week, said officials. The city’s overall growth rate has been steady in the past one week and currently stands at 1.17 per cent. The total count of positive cases recorded so far now stands at 6.27 lakh and the number of tests carried out so far is 52.43 lakh. The active cases now stand at 75,740 in the city. The city saw 8,478 patients being discharged, more than the number of new cases recorded on Sunday.

The mortality rate of the state is steady at around 1.51 per cent despite such a high increase in the number of deaths recorded in the past few weeks. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state was 1,853 so far. These deaths are the cases where patients were positive and tested negative but later died due to other complications.

According to the state government’s data the highest number of deaths was recorded in Nagpur region with 69 and followed by Mumbai with 64 deaths. The total number of deaths recorded in MMR including Mumbai was 144. Civic officials said out of the 64 deaths in the city, 36  had comorbidities, 5 were below 40 years, 17 were between 40 years to 60 years and 42 were above 60 years.
