COVID-19: Mumbai's cases near 2,000; deaths double in state

The number of daily COVID-19 tally increased sharply on Tuesday with the state health department recording 17,864 new cases in the last 24 hours. City’s fresh infections also surged to nearly 2,000, prompting the civic administration to instruct the ward officials to activate as many quarantine and isolation facilities as possible.


Daily deaths in the state almost doubled on Tuesday, with officials reporting 87 fatalities, including 10 each in Pune Municipal Corporation and Yavatmal. On Monday, the state had recorded 48 COVID-19 casualties. City’s daily toll, however, remained consistent. Four people were confirmed to have died of COVID-19. BMC officials said all four deceased patients were suffering from other ailments while three were senior citizens.



With a massive surge from 1,713 new cases on Monday to 1,922 on Tuesday, the BMC got into damage control mode. To bring the situation under control, it has begun aggressive testing across the city. Clean-up marshals have also been enforcing the COVID-19 safety protocols aggressively. 


Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli corporations recorded 373, 251 and 400 cases, respectively, in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). In the MMR, two more deaths were reported on Tuesday besides Mumbai. They were registered in Navi Mumbai.

The state’s recovery rate, which has dropped, now stands at 91.77 per cent with 9,510 patients discharged on Tuesday. The state currently has 13,8813 active cases. 

Mumbai’s recovery rate dropped slightly to 92 per cent, while the doubling rate reduced further to 156 days. The city’s overall growth rate has increased in the past one week and stands at 0.45 per cent.

Around 35.93 lakh COVID-19 tests have been carried out across the city and 3,47,597 have been found positive so far. The active cases in the city now stands at 15,263. 

The mortality rate of the state, which has so far recorded 52,996 COVID-19-related deaths, is at 2.26 per cent. The number of deaths due to other causes stands at 1,266. These include patients who died of other complications after recovering from COVID-19.

Meanwhile, 1.77 crore laboratory samples were collected across the state till date since March 2020. Out of these, 23.47 lakh have come back positive, with a positivity ratio of 13.25 per cent.
