The increase in deaths due to Covid-19 has set alarm bells ringing for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Mumbai registered 94 deaths in just four days, which is higher than the average 15 daily deaths in the earlier two weeks. The BMC is tracking the history of these fatalities to understand the reason for the sudden increase in the number.

Covid-19 cases in the city have been slowly but steadily declining. But this is not the case with fatalities. The number of deaths had reduced in June. In May, the city witnessed 1,656 deaths in a single month with an average of 53 deaths every day. In the first half of June, this reduced to an average of 22 deaths which further dropped in the latter half of the month. In the second half of June, daily deaths reduced to 15. But, in the past four days, the number has started rising again. As per reports published by the BMC, the city recorded 94 deaths from June 30 to July 3. Though the number has not risen sharply, the declining trend of deaths has been reversed.

“We are analysing each and every death to come to know the reasons behind it. Maybe the patients were on ventilators for a longer period or they got shifted from private to public hospitals at the last moment. It will help us improve the system further,” said Suresh Kakani, additional commissioner, BMC. He added that the study of deaths in the second wave is also going on.
