Covid-19: Mumbai cases drop to 661; at 733, doubling rate improves

The test positivity rate (TPR) in the city dropped significantly on Thursday to the lowest in the second Covid-19 wave. Daily cases and fatalities due to the infectious disease also fell.


On Tuesday, the city’s TPR had reduced to 1.76 per cent, and it fell further to 1.71 per cent on Thursday. The TPR was 10.96 per cent on May 5, and has been on a downward trend since.



According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) daily report, Mumbai recorded 661 new cases and 21 deaths. The doubling rate of infections improved to 733 days. On June 8, the city had reported deaths in a single digit.


Of the 21 newly confirmed deceased, 12 patients had comorbidities, 12 were senior citizens and six were in the 40-59 years age group.

The city’s recovery rate remained steady at 96 per cent, after the discharge of 489 more people. 

Daily infections across the state were recorded at 9,195, down from 9,771 the day before. The Covid-19 fatalities, however, increased to 252 from 141 on Wednesday. The case fatality rate in the state stayed at 2.1 per cent. A total of 8,634 people recovered and were discharged on Thursday. Currently, the state has 1.16 lakh active cases.  

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) also recorded a marginal fall in new cases at 2,004, including the ones reported by the BMC. Besides Mumbai, Navi Mumbai with 148 cases and Raigad with 481 reported the maximum number of cases in the MMR.

Thane reported 90 new cases, Kalyan-Dombivli 91 and Vasai-Virar 100. 

The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered four fatalities on Thursday. Vasai-Virar reported two deaths, highest in the MMR after Mumbai. Ulhasnagar and Thane Municipal Corporation reported one death each.
