COVID-19: Maharashtra sees spike in deaths; 102 in 24 hours

With the daily COVID-19 cases consistently rising across the state, Maharashtra on Monday recorded 31,643 fresh infections, taking the total tally to 27.45 lakh. Deaths have also been on the rise with the state reporting 102 fatalities over the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 54,283. The city too saw a major spike with 5,890 fresh cases.


Meanwhile, even the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) crossed the 10,000 cases mark with the Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation areas recording 1,010, 598 and 934 cases respectively.


The state’s recovery rate now stands at 85.71 per cent with 11,665 patients discharged on Monday. The total number of active COVID-19 cases in the state is 27,45,518. Meanwhile, a total of 1.94 crore laboratory samples have been collected till date since March last year, out of which 27.45 lakh have tested positive with a positivity rate of 14.08 per cent.


Mumbai’s recovery rate too has dropped and stands at 85 per cent while the doubling rate has dropped owing to increase in cases and now stands at 53 days. 

Whereas, the city’s overall growth rate increased rapidly over the past week and it currently stands at 1.27 per cent. The total count of positive cases recorded so far is 40.45 lakh and 40.17 lakh tests have been carried out. To the dismay of citizens, the active cases now stand at 47,453 in the city.

In a sigh of relief, the mortality rate of the state is steady at around 1.98 per cent and till date there have been 54,238 COVID-related deaths across the state. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state is 1,344 so far. These deaths are of patients who tested positive but later turned negative and died due to other complications. 

According to the state government’s data, there were 102 COVID-related deaths in the state, with Mumbai recording the highest number at 12, followed by Nagpur city with 10. The MMR recorded a total of 24 deaths, including the ones in Mumbai. Civic officials said that out of the 10 deaths in the city, seven patients were suffering from other ailments and nine were senior citizens.

Meanwhile, another 50 vaccination centres will be added in the city depending on an approval from the central government. Further, on account of Holi, the centres were running at 50 per cent capacity on Monday. Of the 108 active vaccination centres in the city, only 126 units were functioning on Monday. A total of 11,000 beneficiaries were inoculated the same day.
