COVID-19 deaths on the rise in Maharashtra; Mumbai cases below 10,000

The state recorded 63,729 new cases taking the total tally to 37.03 lakh. A total of 398 COVID deaths were reported over the past 24 hours taking the toll to 59,551.

Maharashtra recorded around 63,000 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday while the city saw less than 10,000 infections again. However, what is slowly becoming a matter of concern is the rising number of daily COVID deaths in the state, which has almost touched 400. Even though the mortality rate is steady, the numbers are increasing not just in the state but in Mumbai as well.


The state recorded 63,729 new cases taking the total tally to 37.03 lakh. A total of 398 COVID deaths were reported over the past 24 hours taking the toll to 59,551. The city saw 8,803 fresh cases, whereas the MMR recorded 17,635 infections on Friday. The Thane Municipal Corporation area, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation area recorded 1,530, 1,192 and 1,541 cases respectively, in the MMR. 


The state’s recovery rate stands at 81.12 per cent with 45,335 patients discharged on Friday. There are a total of 63,80,34 active COVID-19 cases in the state. Meanwhile, 2.33 crore laboratory samples have been collected till date since March last year and out of those 37.03 lakh have tested positive with a 15.89 per cent positivity rate. 


Mumbai’s recovery rate now stands at 82 per cent while the doubling rate has become 43 days, both of which has been improving over the last couple of days, said officials. The city’s overall growth rate has been steady over the last one week and it currently stands at 1.60 per cent. To the dismay of citizens, the city has a total of 85,226 active cases. About 9,033 patients were discharged in the city.

The mortality rate of the state is steady at around 1.61 per cent despite the increase in number of deaths. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state was 1,608. 

According to the state government’s data, there were 398 COVID-related deaths in the state on Thursday, and the highest number of deaths was recorded in Mumbai (53). The MMR recorded a total of 73 deaths, including the ones in Mumbai. Civic officials said of the fresh deaths in the city, 26 patients were suffering from other ailments and 37 were senior citizens.
