AMC Suresh Kakani reviews the preparations for the third wave

With the possibility of the third Covid-19 wave looming over the city, Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani, who is in charge of the health department, reviewed preparations at civic-run hospitals and jumbo Covid-19 centres. Although the municipal administration is well prepared, Mumbaikars are urged to follow all instructions for the prevention of infection, especially in children, so that the third wave does not occur, said Kakani.

While his two-day on-field review has shown that hospitals are well prepared, he has instructed health officials to be vigilant and complete remaining procedures as soon as possible. Kakani informed that the bed capacity of jumbo centers is 15,657. He also said separate wards for children are being set up in all hospitals, medical colleges and jumbo centers. The bed capacity has been increased to 2,200 at the Kanjurmarg centre, 2,200 at Malad, 1,200 at Sion, 450 at Worli Racecourse, 700 at Richardson & Cruddas at Byculla, 1,500 at Goregaon NESCO and 100 at Worli NSCI. About 70% of these beds have oxygen supply through ducts. “Arrangements for generating medical oxygen from the air are being made in hospitals with oxygen cylinders backup,” said Kakani.

He said three workshops have been conducted for pediatricians to guide them on treatment. “We will pay special attention to assure there is no shortage in the treatment of children. A separate room has been set up for pregnant women. Though the second wave has subsided and vaccination is on in full swing, Mumbaikars should follow preventive rules properly,” said Kakani.
