Chalk out rules for money matters: Lawmaker tells BMC

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation

Citing the Opposition’s repeated accusations of corruption against the Maha Vikas Aghadi, corporator for 10 years and MLA Rais Shaikh has demanded that the civic body chalks out rules and regulations for financial transactions to be done by the administrator of the BMC.

The term of the corporators came to an end on March 7 following which Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal was appointed as the administrator, till BMC elections are held. In a letter to the CM and the civic chief, Shaikh stressed the need for a set of rules to ensure transparency in the management of the corporation, particularly financial matters.

“The BMC is one of the largest and the richest [civic bodies] in Asia. Until now people’s representatives have done their best to control the administration. They are also carried out their responsibility to carry out maintenance of various basic services in the city such as water supply, roads, rainwater, water supply, sewerage with the help of administration. But now the whole responsibility is over the administrator [sic],” said Shaikh.

Pointing to several tenders and ongoing projects, Shaikh’s letter added, “The Opposition has repeatedly accused BMC of corruption. Therefore, the image of the Mahavikas Aghadi government has been tarnished among the common people. Therefore, we request you to make out urgent rules and regulations regarding the financial transactions to be done by the administrator of BMC [sic].”
