The civic body has proposed to increase the storage capacity of the two underground tanks at Hindmata, built to provide a catchment for floodwater. It is augmenting the two tanks, as the current capacity is not sufficient.

The two tanks were built at Pramod Mahajan Kala Park in Dadar West and St Xavier Ground in Parel last year. As per the initial plan, the Dadar tank was to have a capacity of 6 crore litres and Parel 4 crore litres, however, they were built to hold 1.62 crore litres and 1.05 crore litres of water, respectively. It spent Rs 130 crore on the construction of the two underground tanks and a rainwater pumping station under Hindmata flyover.

Now, the BMC is augmenting the capacity of the two tanks. The contracts include covering the tanks. As per the proposal sent to the standing committee, the administration proposed M/S Yogesh Construction to expand the capacity of the tank at Pramod Mahajan Kala Park by 1.99 crore litres. The proposal mentions the project cost of Rs 28.77 crore, but the contractor is ready to do the work for 20 per cent below the estimated cost. The total cost of the project will be Rs 35.30 crore, including charges and taxes. To increase the capacity of the tank at St. Xavier’s ground, it has estimated the cost to be Rs 34 crore.

The total cost of increasing the capacity of the two tanks would be Rs 69.30 crore. Civic officials said that after augmenting the tanks, their capacity will increase to store rainwater for three hours during heavy rain. The idea behind the underground tanks was to hold the floodwater until it could be released, after the high tide, as the drainage pipelines were not enough to carry all the rainwater during downpour.
