The Standing Committee on Wednesday approved a proposal to set up high-tech computer laboratories in 25 municipal schools in the city. While BMC officials claim the decision was taken after a pilot project yielded positive results, corporators from an opposition party alleged that no such labs exist in any of the civic schools.

The BMC will spend '3.48 crore on these labs. “Generally, in municipal schools, children don’t get to explore and create something from scratch with the help of high-tech electronics and mechanics. These laboratories will give the children just that,” an official said.

Congress corporator and Standing Committee member Asif Zakaria said, “I contacted the schools listed in the proposal, where according to the administration the pilot project is going on, for information about such a module. The authorities said that no such programme is being held or no such lab has been set up at their schools.”

“And if this is how the BMC will behave then what is the point in wasting the money,” Zakaria said. Another committee member, Javed Juneja of Congress, also echoed similar thoughts. The proposal was for awarding a contract for the maintenance and operations of the electronic and mechanical arrangement at the laboratories and Atal Tinkering Laboratories won the contract.

Dismissing the allegations, Additional Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said they decided to expand the project to 25 more civic schools, because we received good response from the pilot run.
