In wake of the Kamala Mills fire, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up 34 fire safety implementation cells across the city, to ensure that eateries and other establishments abide by the safety norms.

According to sources, the cells would be in-charge of conducting time-to-time inspections at different wards and if they come across any violation, then notices would be issued to the establishments under sections 5 & 6 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006. Each cell will have a designated fire officer, who will coordinate with the ward designated officer and health officer and conduct inspections at buildings, malls, hospitals, theatres and eateries.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an official from the municipal commissioner's office said, "The cells will conduct inspections and issue notices in case of violations. If serious negligence is found on the part of any establishment, then the chief fire officer and local ward officer will coordinate with the police and seal the unit."
