For now, civic body will build two flyovers and an elevated rotary junction; BJP attributes push for project to BMC polls
The GMLR is expected to ease traffic between Goregaon and Mulund
The work on BMC’s ambitious Goregaon Mulund Link Road will begin in phases, with civic officials planning to build the tricky tunnels under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park later. For now, the corporation will construct two 6-lane flyovers and an elevated rotary junction for R819 crore. Opposition BJP attributed BMC’s push for the project to the civic body polls scheduled for next year.

The GMLR project spans 12.2 km, including 4.7-km twin tunnels under the national park and a 1.6-km underpass at Goregaon Film City. Officials said they have already begun revamping a flyover near Nahur railway station and the widening of GMLR near the proposed tunnels is currently underway. The project is expected to improve east-west connectivity in the city and ease traffic congestion on the route.
The BMC will soon focus on building one 6-lane flyover—1.2 km—from Dindoshi court to film city and another—1.8—at Dr Hedgewar junction in Mulund apart from the elevated rotary junction at Mulund Khindipada. The work also includes repairing a road under the Tansa pipeline and a pedestrian elevated bridge in the vicinity.
“Now, under this tender two flyovers and an elevated rotary junction will be constructed. The tender process of tunnels at SGNP and Film City is going on and the work will start afterwards,” said an official from BMC’s bridges department. The twin tunnels are estimated to cost Rs 6,000 crore.
The final phase of the project involves the construction of a 6-lane flyover connecting GMLR to the Eastern Express Highway and another tunnel under the Western Express Highway. The BMC is yet to disclose the cost of this work.
