After the last date of handing over the keys of Campa Cola society was not adhered to by the residents on Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will be filing a contempt of court case in the Supreme Court (SC) against them. However, the residents of the society are hopeful that an extension will be granted to them, after a fresh petition was submitted to the vacation bench, slated for hearing today.

While the civic body has not finalised a date for demolition of the compound, they have decided to file the case in the next two days. The BMC is of the opinion that there is no connection between the orders to vacate the flats and the hearing on Tuesday. They had issued a notice on May 29, to hand over the keys to the homes by the end of the month after an undertaking was given to the court last December that they would get the houses vacated.

However, when this reporter spoke to the residents of the compound, some were of the opinion that since they have nowhere else to go, they won’t leave their homes. mid-day had earlier reported how the SC had previously rejected the extension of stay and had stuck to its order of vacating the flats by May 31. Most residents, however, feel that protest is the only option left for them.

One resident of Mid-Town apartment at the compound, on the request of anonymity, said, “I see protest as the only way to save my house when the BMC is at our doorstep. We have been suffering long for no fault of our own. The BMC refuses to cooperate with us.”

Mohan Adtani, additional municipal commissioner who is in charge of the demolition of Campa Cola compound, said, “No keys have been handed over to us till 5 pm, which was the deadline for residents. We would inform the court and file a contempt to court case in the next two to three days.”
